France Appeals Michael Olise’s Yellow Card Ahead of World Cup Quarter-Final
The French Football Federation (FFF) has lodged an appeal with FIFA in a bid to overturn the yellow card shown to Michael Olise during France’s 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Olise, who has been one of France’s standout performers at the tournament, was cautioned following an altercation with Paraguay midfielder Matías Galarza. Although Galarza went to ground clutching his face, television replays appeared to show the Bayern Munich winger only grabbing his opponent’s shirt.
If the booking remains in place, Olise will enter Thursday’s World Cup quarter-final against Morocco just one yellow card away from suspension. Another caution would rule him out of a potential semi-final against either Spain or Portugal should France advance.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the FFF has formally submitted an appeal to FIFA, arguing that the caution was issued in error. FIFA has not yet commented publicly on the federation’s request.
The French federation insists its appeal is based solely on what it believes was an incorrect refereeing decision and is not connected to FIFA’s recent ruling involving United States forward Folarin Balogun.
Balogun was initially sent off during the USA’s Round of 16 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina but was later cleared to play against Belgium after FIFA suspended his one-match ban for a year under Article 27 of its disciplinary code.
That decision drew strong criticism from UEFA, which described the ruling as one that had “crossed a red line” and warned that “the integrity of the game” was at risk.
In a strongly worded statement, UEFA added: “We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision.”
