Harry Kane Fires England into World Cup Last 16 with Brace Against DR Congo

Harry Kane delivered another captain’s performance as England came from behind to defeat the Democratic Republic of the Congo 2-1 in Atlanta, securing their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

England’s hopes of ending their 60-year wait for a major international trophy were hanging by a thread after Brian Cipenga stunned the Three Lions with an early opener for DR Congo. However, Kane scored twice in the closing stages to complete a dramatic comeback and spare Thomas Tuchel’s side from one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.

The victory sets up a blockbuster last-16 clash against tournament co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca on Sunday.

Kane’s match-winning brace further enhanced his remarkable World Cup record. England’s all-time leading scorer now has 13 World Cup goals and has taken his tally to five goals at this year’s tournament, keeping him firmly in contention for the Golden Boot award.

DR Congo’s impressive World Cup journey came to an end after a memorable campaign that marked their first appearance at the tournament in 52 years. The Leopards exceeded expectations by reaching the knockout stage and came agonisingly close to producing one of the biggest shocks of the competition.

England endured a difficult first half as Tuchel’s side struggled to cope with DR Congo’s intensity. Cipenga’s early strike exposed England’s defensive frailties, while goalkeeper Jordan Pickford will feel he could have done better to prevent the opening goal.

The Three Lions gradually grew into the contest, with Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford, and Kane all forcing impressive saves from goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, who produced a series of outstanding stops to frustrate England before the break.

Tuchel changed the momentum of the game with attacking substitutions, introducing Bukayo Saka, Anthony Gordon, and Eberechi Eze. Gordon made an immediate impact by providing the cross for Kane’s equaliser with 15 minutes remaining.

The Newcastle winger then supplied another assist in the 86th minute as Kane unleashed a powerful strike into the roof of the net to complete the comeback and seal England’s passage into the last 16.
