2026 World Cup: Five African Countries Eliminated as Senegal, DR Congo Crash Out
Senegal have become the fifth African nation to be eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Belgium in their Round of 32 clash on Wednesday.
The Teranga Lions appeared to be on course for qualification after taking a 2-0 lead, but Belgium mounted a remarkable comeback. Youri Tielemans sealed the victory from the penalty spot in the fifth minute of extra time stoppage time, sending the Red Devils into the Round of 16.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Democratic Republic of the Congo also bowed out of the tournament following a 2-1 defeat to England.
The Leopards made a dream start as Brian Cipenga opened the scoring early, beating England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford at his near post. However, England responded through captain Harry Kane, who netted twice to complete the comeback and secure a place in the Round of 16 for the Three Lions.
England will now face co-hosts Mexico in the Round of 16 as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.
