Argentina Complete Stunning Comeback to Beat Egypt and Reach World Cup Quarter-Finals

Argentina produced a remarkable late comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 and book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after coming from two goals down in a dramatic Round of 16 clash.

The reigning world champions, who were pushed to extra time by Cape Verde in the previous round, looked destined for a shock exit as Egypt raced into a 2-0 lead through Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico.

Cristian Romero gave Argentina hope with a header in the 79th minute before Lionel Messi, who had earlier missed a first-half penalty, equalised five minutes later to set up a thrilling finale.

Enzo Fernández completed the incredible turnaround in stoppage time, heading home Lautaro Martínez’s cross to send Argentina into the last eight, where they will face either Colombia or Switzerland.

The winning goal arrived just moments after Egypt believed they should have been awarded a penalty following an apparent challenge on Mohamed Salah, a decision that sparked furious protests from the Egyptian bench.

Egypt, who had never won a World Cup match before this tournament, were only minutes away from one of the greatest upsets in the competition’s history after eliminating Australia in the Round of 32.

The Pharaohs took the lead after 15 minutes when Yasser Ibrahim rose highest to head Marwan Attia’s cross into the bottom corner.

Argentina were handed a golden opportunity to equalise shortly afterwards when Haissem Hassan fouled Nicolás Tagliafico inside the penalty area. However, Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir produced an excellent save to deny Messi from the spot.

Shobeir continued his outstanding display by making superb saves to keep out Alexis Mac Allister and Julián Álvarez before halftime.

Although Mostafa Zico had a goal ruled out by VAR early in the second half, he eventually doubled Egypt’s advantage midway through the period after finishing Hassan’s inviting cross.

Argentina struggled to create clear opportunities until Romero’s late header ignited the comeback.

Messi then brought his side level by firing home via the underside of the crossbar before Fernández completed the turnaround with a stoppage-time header, scoring the 3,000th goal in FIFA World Cup history.

Despite missing a penalty earlier in the match, Messi once again proved decisive when it mattered most, helping Argentina snatch victory from the brink of elimination.

For Egypt, the defeat was heartbreaking after an outstanding performance that had them on the verge of a famous victory. Goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir delivered one of the performances of the tournament, while Mohamed Salah and his teammates battled bravely against the defending champions.

The Pharaohs also felt aggrieved after appeals for a late penalty on Salah were waved away, moments before Argentina scored the winning goal.

Argentina will now face the winners of the quarter-final between Switzerland and Colombia as they continue their quest to successfully defend the FIFA World Cup title.
