Jordan Henderson Set for Wrist Surgery After England’s Win Over Mexico
England midfielder Jordan Henderson is expected to undergo surgery on the wrist he injured while celebrating his side’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico, casting doubt over his availability for the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 36-year-old sustained the injury after appearing to fall awkwardly over the advertising boards during England’s celebrations at the Estadio Azteca following Sunday’s Round of 16 triumph.
England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed after the match that Henderson’s injury appeared serious and revealed that the veteran midfielder had been taken to hospital for further assessment.
“Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad,” Tuchel told BBC One after the match.
“It’s a quite serious injury and it doesn’t fit the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital.”
According to reports from the BBC, Henderson remained in hospital in Mexico City after the match and did not return with the England squad to their training base in Kansas City.
The report also stated that the Brentford midfielder is expected to undergo wrist surgery but hopes to stay with the England squad for the remainder of the tournament despite the injury.
Henderson has featured only once at the World Cup so far, making a late substitute appearance in England’s group-stage victory over Panama.
His injury adds to England’s growing list of concerns ahead of Saturday’s quarter-final clash against Norway, with Reece James already ruled out through a hamstring injury and Jarell Quansah suspended following his red card against Mexico.
