1. Italy (1934 & 1938)

Italy became the first nation to retain the FIFA World Cup after dominating international football during the 1930s.

The Azzurri claimed their maiden world title on home soil in 1934 by defeating Czechoslovakia 2-1 after extra time in the final.

Four years later, under the guidance of legendary coach Vittorio Pozzo, Italy successfully defended the trophy at the 1938 World Cup in France. They eliminated Norway, hosts France, and Brazil before beating Hungary 4-2 in the final, with Silvio Piola scoring twice.

Italy looked capable of extending their dominance with a third consecutive title, but the outbreak of World War II forced the cancellation of the 1942 and 1946 tournaments, bringing an end to their remarkable era.

2. Brazil (1958 & 1962)

Brazil became the second—and still the most recent—country to successfully defend the World Cup.

After the disappointment of losing the 1950 final on home soil, Brazil bounced back in spectacular fashion at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. A 17-year-old Pelé announced himself on the global stage, helping Brazil defeat the hosts 5-2 in the final alongside legends such as Garrincha, Didi, Vavá, and Mário Zagallo.

Four years later in Chile, Brazil retained the trophy despite Pelé suffering an early injury during the tournament. Garrincha inspired the Seleção throughout the knockout rounds before they defeated Czechoslovakia 3-1 in the final to secure back-to-back World Cup titles.

Brazil’s pursuit of an unprecedented third consecutive World Cup crown ended at the 1966 tournament, where they suffered a shock elimination in the group stage.
