Tuchel Hails England’s Belief After Comeback Win Over DR Congo
England head coach Thomas Tuchel praised his players for refusing to give up after they recovered from an early setback to defeat the Democratic Republic of the Congo 2-1 and book their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Three Lions endured a nightmare start in Atlanta as Brian Cipenga fired DR Congo into the lead after just seven minutes. However, captain Harry Kane scored twice in the second half to complete the comeback and send England through to a last-16 clash with tournament co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.
Speaking after the match, Tuchel credited his team’s resilience and determination.
“We kept believing. We had the worst start possible. First shot, first goal. Then it became even more difficult,” Tuchel said.
The England manager also believed his side should have been awarded a first-half penalty after Kane appeared to be brought down by DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi.
“After the first water break, we were on top of the game. I think we should have had a penalty,” he added.
“The substitutes came on and put the effort in, and we won it. Well deserved, but we had to work a lot.”
Tuchel urged his players to maintain the same fighting spirit as the tournament progresses.
“We have to have that mindset. If it is getting hard, it is getting hard, but don’t lose patience and don’t lose belief.”
The German coach also reserved special praise for Kane, who once again delivered when England needed him most.
“He is getting better,” Tuchel said of the England captain after his match-winning brace.
