Brazil Back Carlo Ancelotti Despite Shock 2026 FIFA World Cup Exit
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has reaffirmed its confidence in head coach Carlo Ancelotti despite the Seleção’s shock Round of 16 exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Brazil’s hopes of winning a record-extending sixth World Cup title came to an unexpected end after a 2-1 defeat to Norway on Sunday, marking the country’s earliest elimination from the tournament since 1966.
Despite the disappointing campaign, Brazil’s national team coordinator, Rodrigo Caetano, insisted the federation remains fully committed to Ancelotti’s long-term project and plans to continue working with the Italian through to the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
“It is up to us to ensure the cycle continues normally, with calmness, while making the necessary adjustments,” Caetano said after the match.
“We want to continue our work with the coach through to the 2030 World Cup. We need tranquility to move forward and prepare for the next tournament.”
Ancelotti, who became Brazil’s head coach in May 2025 after leaving Real Madrid, recently signed a contract extension that will keep him in charge until the 2030 World Cup.
The 67-year-old arrived with the ambition of guiding Brazil to another world title, but instead oversaw the nation’s poorest World Cup performance in six decades.
Caetano acknowledged the disappointment within the squad but praised the professionalism and dedication shown by both the players and coaching staff throughout the competition.
“Everyone is saddened, frustrated and disappointed,” he said. “But we cannot ignore the professionalism and commitment shown by the players and staff throughout our time together.”
Ancelotti also remained optimistic after the defeat, insisting Brazil would use the painful experience as motivation to begin a new chapter.
The CBF echoed that message in an official statement, emphasizing that Brazil’s football history has been defined by both victories and setbacks.
“Today we leave the World Cup certain that we will return stronger,” the federation stated.
Brazil captain Marquinhos also apologised to supporters following the defeat and urged fans to continue believing in the national team.
“We have to learn from this experience and apologise to the Brazilian people,” he said. “We ask for the fans’ support because we have four years to work towards achieving great things again.”
The defender admitted Brazil failed to take advantage of their opportunities against Norway, while their opponents proved more clinical in front of goal when it mattered most.
