Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been crowned Premier League Player of the Season, capping off a stellar campaign in which he was also named the Football Writers’ Association men’s Player of the Year.
Fernandes equaled the record for most assists in a single Premier League season after providing his 20th of the year against Nottingham Forest last weekend. In addition to his creative output, he netted eight goals in 37 appearances, playing a pivotal role in securing a third-place finish and Champions League qualification for United. His influence is further highlighted by his league-high 132 chances createdβ43 more than the next best player, Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai.
He is the first Manchester United player to claim the award since Nemanja Vidic in 2011. The winner was determined by a combination of public votes and a panel of football experts, with Fernandes beating out fellow nominees including Arsenal’s David Raya, Gabriel, and Declan Rice, as well as Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.
As United prepare for their final match of the season against Brighton this Sunday, the club also solidified its coaching staff. Following Michael Carrickβs permanent appointment as manager on Friday, Steve Holland, Jonny Evans, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion, and Craig Mawson have all signed two-year contract extensions to remain on his team.
